Mercy Bridges, an adult literacy program serving as a ministry of the Sisters of Mercy, would like to introduce their new Director, Ms. Sheryl Feigenbaum. Sheryl replaces Sr. Edwardine Weaver who retired the end of November.

Sheryl grew up on Long Island, New York and came to the Rochester area in 1985 to attend SUNY Brockport. She graduated from SUNY Brockport with a B.S. in Health Science. She began attending Nazareth College and graduated in 1993 with a Master’s degree in Elementary Education and Health Education. She substituted at the middle and high school levels for many of the area school districts and then accepted an elementary teaching position in Richardson, Texas where she taught fifth grade. Having developed a love for Rochester, she moved back and accepted a position with the Rochester City School District where she taught elementary school for eight years. During her years in the Rochester City Schools, she once again attended SUNY Brockport to obtain her certifications and degree in School Administration. She accepted a position as Vice Principal at the elementary school for the Holley Central School District. As part of her administrative experiences she has been an Interim District Office Administrator for the Penfield School District, a principal for a New York State accredited private day school in Brighton, and an Instructional Specialist for Monroe #1 BOCES in Fairport; during which time she obtained her certification in Special Education. Most recently, she has been an Academic Reading Consultant with the Buffalo City School District and the Coordinator of Special Education for the ARC of Livingston-Wyoming.

Sheryl has stated that she is very excited about this position and is looking forward to the continued work of Mercy Bridges. She is committed to finding additional ways that Mercy Bridges can lend support to the adults in the Rochester community wishing to learn to read or improve in the area of literacy. She looks forward to the opportunity to collaborate with existing agencies in the pursuit of supporting the residents in the Rochester and surrounding areas.

She encourages anyone interested in learning more about becoming a tutor to call her at 585-288-2710 x526. No prior teaching experience is needed and Mercy Bridges provides an exceptional training program for all new tutors.

Remember that, “Volunteers are the only human beings on the face of the earth who reflect this nation's compassion, unselfish caring, patience, and just plain love for one another.”- Erma Brombeck
